Embrace by Cellesria Embrace by Cellesria
Hey everyone, :)

I know I haven't posted anything new for a while and that's mostly because I have been pretty busy with other work and the fact that I like to keep most of my artwork on just my website. Since I haven't posted anything here for a while I thought I'd post this one.

Update: some people had recently mentioned how they thought the woman's pose was over exaggerated a bit so I adjusted the pose a little. Thanks for all your input everyone! :)

To those who may be offended by this work because you don't find it to be a perfectly accurate and historical depiction of Native Americans - I apologize if it offends you but it was not my intention to offend or even create a accurate historical depiction of any specific tribe or culture in the first place. This is a fantasy work! I am not a realist but a fantasy artist and I only borrowed some elements and inspiration from Native American culture to create this work because I find it so beautiful. I don't appreciate being called ignorant or racist just because I chose to paint my characters the way I did. I intentionally did not choose to depict any specific tribe because of the fact that this is a fantasy work - And for those wondering, yes I did look at a few references.

I chose to make these characters less clothed because in my story they live in a very hot climate and because I wanted to add sex appeal to this image. I was aiming to create a very warm and sensual/sexy picture of a beautiful couple in love who happen to look similar to Native Americans, Is that really so racist and wrong? I love and admire Native American culture and I don't see how my picture creates a negative stereotype. I will not take down this picture nor will I modify it because I am an artist and it is every artists artistic right to create.

I can't please everyone with my artwork, it is an impossible task and I will never try to either - Just about every piece of art that exists today will offend someone somewhere. I paint for myself and for the others who like my work. Every artist has the freedom to paint from their heart as you have the freedom to your own opinion. If you don't like my work you don't have to look at it and it's as simple as that.

Also if you ask me there isn't enough darker skin or culture in fantasy art - one of the reasons I was inspired to paint this image along with my other paintings "Akanksha" and "Exotic Butterfly"

Enough with all of the hate and intolerance, the world needs a lot more love and there are much bigger problems in the world to worry about than perfectly accurate/inaccurate portrayals of cultures in fantasy art.

Thanks for understanding.

Embrace by *Cellesria

The suggester says of this tender moment, "Some of us know how it's like to see our significant other be forced to leave for long periods of time. The only comforting facts are their never-ending love and the promise of coming back as soon as they can. And that's enough, because knowing that you are truly loved and that you love back with the same intensity is the essence of life for so many wonderful souls out there. It isn't easy to wait, that's for sure, but this yearning is just a way of discovering yourself. You would definitely do anything for your love and that's not just a cliché, you have proved this one to another more times than you can count. I don't see nything wrong with it, it depicts a serene, intimate moment between two lovers. What could be more beautiful than that? In fact I would not care if you made them asian, black, white...any race would look incredible because your artwork is amazing :D

Okay, where do I start? First, I'm going to link you to this blog: mycultureisnotatrend.tumblr.com/ Do me a favor and read through it. If you're not going to, I am just going to explain my point right here, and I really hope you actually take the time to understand what I am trying to tell you. I am not attacking you, first off. I am explaining.

This is racist. This is about as racist as a minstrel show. The feathers, the outfits, all of it. I understand the United States does not do much in the way of education about First Nations cultures, but this current throwback trend of using First Nations as the new "exotic" is not cool. I am sure you had no bad intentions, but that does not make this any less offensive.

I hope you read that blog, which explains my point so much better, and I hope you understand why I said these things.

Where do *I* start? You need to be very careful throwing around strong words you don't know the meaning to. Do me a favor and look up the definitions of the words you use before you start applying them to people with this "holier than thou" attitude of yours: "Let me educated you, you poor racist [American] bastard!"

First off, racism is defined as "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others."

Let me break that down for you - just in case you don't understand. Racism is the belief that the inherent difference (i.e. skin color, body shape, etc) between human races define the superiority of one race over the other. Do me a favor and look at her illustration again and tell me that is what you see. Would you still have posted this if you didn't know Cellertria is white?

Second, you may not have realized it, but you just made yourself appear that you have some deep-seated prejudices against Americans. You say how you *understand* how us American's aren't as smart as you because our education system is supposedly not as good as yours. Makes you look hypocritical. Amusing.

Third. I read the blog you linked to, and it seems you have missed the author's point entirely. Since you seem to love making generalizations, I'm not surprised you glossed over the fine details. The author is saying how they don't appreciate how other cultures are trying to exploit their culture and turn it into a trend. In other words, popular [white people] dressing up as "Indians." (Read the blog's introduction).

So, what *exactly* are you trying to say here. White people aren't allowed to create illustrations of other cultures because we're all supposedly racist? What do you want her to paint? A bunch of fat Americans driving a giant SUV through a McDonald's drive through? I bet you wouldn't have objected then.

To address the first part: I have no idea what race the artist belongs to. These supposed magic powers of mine to detect whiteness through a computer monitor sound a little too unbelievable.
My dislike at this comes from the artist using a rather distasteful stereotype. To use a stereotype of a culture, especially one as diverse and varied as First Nations, is disrespectful and yes, racist. I'm sorry you do not see that.
To address the second part: I'm glad I amused you by speaking knowledgeably about the system that educated me. "Deep-seated prejudices against Americans". Funny how I have deep-seated prejudices against my own country of origin, the country I've served well and love deeply. Because of how deeply I love my country, I can acknowledge its flaws without insulting it.
To address the third part: The blogger doesn't like how her culture is treated as "exotic", "other", or how her entire culture is glossed with the same brush. Neither do I.

I did not say in any way that white people are not allowed to draw other cultures. Do not put words in my mouth. If you are going to draw another culture though, depict it correctly. Do not lean on widely-perpetuated and disrespectful stereotypes. Research is not difficult in this day and age. There are many helpful websites that depict actual First Nations outfits and hairstyles, and provide helpful information about what is appropriate.

To conclude, I do not like how you automatically assumed when I criticized the United States educational system that I was criticizing the whole of the U.S. I do not like how you assumed I was an arrogant foreigner. I do not like that you felt the need to attack me when I have said nor done nothing to you. My comment was addressed to the artist, not you, and I do not like that you felt the need to insert yourself in a conversation that had nothing to do with you. You also made the assumption that I was attacking her, despite my specifically stating I wasn't. Criticism does not equal hatred. You would do well to learn that.

Wow, racist, huh? That's new!

I was considering if I should just flat out ignore this conversation, but I thought I'd step in to defend my art. First off, this is a work of fiction, not an actual depiction of any particular Native American tribe. I wanted to create a piece that was inspired from some aspects of Native American culture.

I'm not a realist. I paint beauty and dreamy/fantasy art that sometimes borrows elements from reality. When I first started working on this piece, I already knew what I had in mind. I took inspiration from the Native American culture, and incorporated what I found into my piece. I wanted to create a very sexy/sensual, fictional scene. To do that, I adjusted the clothing accordingly. If you call that racist, then maybe you have no business criticizing my artwork - you just don't understand it.

My piece was NOT created to demean, stereotype or exploit. It was created as a celebration of love, sexuality, the beautiful human body and culture - not necessarily depicting any specific tribe/culture. If you find that distasteful, or inappropriate, I fell sorry for you - you have missed the point entirely. Besides, who even said this scene takes place on Earth or that they're even Native American? I sure didn't...

(FYI, I've been contacted by a few Native Americans that absolutely loved this piece).

Her photograph is prominently displayed in her deviantID. Excuse me if I presumed that you would have...done your own research...about the artist before calling her work racist. Considering how little you seem to know about this artist, and the work she does, makes you seem ignorant and your argument moot. Get off your high horse and learn a little bit about the person you're about to insult.

What makes you believe Native Americans wouldn't like this piece? Did you send them all an email to ask? Don't you think you're being racist by presuming what another race or culture, outside of your own, may find offensive? On whose authority are you speaking? You may not realize it, but you're being racist by making these assumptions.

If Cellesria would have made an illustration of a black man being lynched, or a Jewish man counting money - then yeah, you could say that was racist. But you're commenting on some fine subtleties that only exist in your own racist mind. From what I can see in this 5-page thread, you're the only one to suggest this piece contains racist stereotypes. It seems to me, you're seeing things that aren't there. Put down the crack pipe.

In regards to stepping in, yes, I felt the need put your in your damn place. I happen to know a lot about this artist's work (even purchased a few pieces) and I'm not going to stand idly by as you piss all over it with your "this is racist" bullshit. I've followed her work for years, and I happen to like it very much. If you think what your doing is criticism, you'd do well to learn the difference.
